Benin Mamas is a community-centered maternal health organization working with women, communities, health professionals, and local partners to address barriers to quality maternal healthcare in underserved communities in Benin. We combine community knowledge with public health evidence to design, implement, evaluate, and strengthen maternal health solutions that respond to the realities of women’s lives.
From Community Experience to Public Health Action
We believe communities should not simply receive maternal health programs. They should help shape them.
Women’s lived experiences, local knowledge, health-system data, and scientific evidence all contribute to understanding what is happening and what solutions are most likely to work.
That knowledge guides our programs and helps us continuously learn, adapt, and improve.
Why Maternal Health?
Where a woman lives, the resources available to her, her household circumstances, and the accessibility and quality of the health system can profoundly shape her experience of pregnancy and childbirth. But maternal health challenges rarely have one cause.
A woman may understand the importance of antenatal care but still face transportation or financial barriers. She may reach a health facility but experience poor communication or disrespectful treatment. Health professionals themselves may be working within systems facing staffing, resource, referral, or infrastructure challenges.
That is why improving maternal health requires more than one solution. It requires understanding the system surrounding women.
Building Solutions That Last
Our goal is not to create communities that depend on Benin Mamas Foundation. Our goal is to contribute to stronger communities, stronger connections to care, and stronger systems capable of supporting women long after an individual project ends.
How We Work
LISTEN: We begin by understanding women’s lived experiences, maternal health needs, barriers to care, and existing community strengths.
CO-DESIGN: We work with women, communities, health professionals, and local stakeholders to develop solutions that reflect local priorities and realities.
IMPLEMENT: We translate evidence into practical maternal health interventions that address identified barriers.
MEASURE: We examine not only how many women we reach, but also whether our interventions produce meaningful and equitable changes.
IMPROVE: We use data, implementation experience, and community feedback to continuously strengthen our work.
SUSTAIN: We seek to strengthen existing community and health-system structures so that successful solutions can continue beyond an individual project.
